5 Ways We Can Celebrate Earth Day and Make a Difference

As we celebrate Earth Day this year, it is important to remember the impact that our actions have on the environment and the planet we call home. For women of color, this is especially important, as we have historically been disproportionately affected by environmental issues such as air pollution and access to clean water.

At Devoted To Her we understand the importance of taking care of our bodies and the planet. Here are some tips on how you can celebrate Earth Day and make a difference in your community:

  1. Support Black-owned sustainable businesses: One way to make a difference is to support Black-owned businesses that prioritize sustainability. Look for brands that use eco-friendly packaging, ethically-sourced ingredients, and have a commitment to reducing their carbon footprint.
  2. Start a garden: Starting a garden is a great way to connect with nature and reduce your carbon footprint. You can grow your own vegetables and herbs, which not only helps the environment but also supports a healthy diet. You can also catch my kids and I here getting a start on our garden!
  3. Reduce plastic use: Plastic is one of the biggest contributors to environmental pollution. As women of color, we can reduce our plastic use by using reusable water bottles, shopping bags, and food containers. Consider swapping out plastic beauty and personal care products for eco-friendly alternatives as well.
  4. Educate yourself and others: Educating yourself and others about the impact of our actions on the environment is key to creating lasting change. Take the time to learn about environmental issues and how they affect women of color specifically. Share what you learn with your friends and family, and encourage them to make small changes in their daily lives.
  5. Get involved in your community: Participating in local environmental initiatives and volunteering with organizations dedicated to sustainability is a great way to make a difference in your community. Consider joining a community garden, participating in a neighborhood cleanup, or attending local events focused on sustainability.

As women of color, it is important that we take an active role in protecting our planet and creating a more sustainable future. By making small changes in our daily lives and supporting eco-friendly businesses, we can make a big impact on the environment and ensure a healthy future for ourselves and generations to come. Happy Earth Day!
